CLAT and AILET are two of the most prestigious exams for entering a National Law University. While CLAT is an umbrella exam for a number of NLUs, the AILET exam provides for entrance into NLU-D. On the declaration of results and near to the point of choosing colleges, the students are in frenzy over which college to choose amongst the group. Which one is better than the other?

This article will try to compare and bring forth the truth in the comparisons between three good NLUs which are often a point of great debate and discussion as all have done well. The clash for supremacy between WBNUJS, NLU-D and NLUJ has been on for quite some time now and every alternate individual has a different view on it. This article mainly aims to consolidate all the facts and present the true picture. It is by no means an effort to make one college look better over the other and any mistake in facts is highly regrettable.
Let us start with a bit of history.
WBNUJS: West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences
Establishment: WBNUJS was established in 1999 by the WBNUJS Act and has since been providing quality education in the field of law.
Batch Strength: 125(approx)
Location and Infrastructure: The College is located in the Salt Lake City overlooking the Eastern Bypass. It is one of the only NLU which is situated in midst of the hub-hub of a city. It is well connected to various metro stations and railway stations of Kolkata. The campus is spread over an area of 5 acres consisting of the Academic Block, Hostels and Faculty Housing.
A very important part of the infrastructure in a law school is the library as most of the great work is done there. NUJS has a fully AC library with a good collection which can be accessed between 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends.
Faculty: NUJS at one time had the best faculty among all law schools but it saw a great exodus over time to NLU-D and JGLS. However, it still has a decent faculty with a few big names and the things look bright in future.
Co-Curricular: A law school is not just endless cramming of laws. It includes various activities which allow for the all round development of the student body and hence these become a major factor in deciding a college’s worth.
Debating and MUN: NUJS hosts the largest open debate in the country. Also the NUJS MUN is widely known.
Outlawed and Invicta: Outlawed in cultural and Invicta is the sports fest of NUJS both of which see a massive participation.
Mooting: Mooting plays a very important role in grooming the law student and is an important part of the law life. NUJS has a great mooting culture and has been winning competitions since soon after its conception. It has performed well consistently in good moots like Jessup, VIS, Elsa and other international moots.
Sports: The College enters into an agreement with SAI every year to use it facilities as places of sports.
Alumni: Since the college was established in 1999, it has sent out great lawyers. It has an outstanding alumni who are spread in various fields and have been raising standards ever since. Furthermore, there have been a few selections into the civil services and the judicial services. Students have also gone higher studies to Cambridge, Oxford etc. The college has also had two Rhodes scholars.
Placement: This is probably the most important criterion on which a law school is judged. NUJS has been doing really since it started. It has a record of 100% placement in the past barring a year or two. (This is not inclusive of students who do not sit for placements and rather pursue a higher education or other opportunities). The highest packages in the last placement have been around 15-20 lakhs and the average has been around 12-13 lakhs.
Peer Atmosphere: It is very important in a college to assess the mind-set of one’s batch mates since this pushes one to do better. NUJS being one of the top colleges has seen great students and has a high level of competition and is at the same time chilled out. Seniors are always there to help a junior in need.
NLU-J: National Law University Jodhpur
Establishment: The College was established in 1999 by the National Law University Act, 1999 but the first batch was admitted in 2001 and the college has since been instrumental in grooming great lawyers.
Batch Strength: 88 (approx)
Location and Infrastructure: NLUJ has a beautiful campus spread over a land of 55-acres. The classes are all air-conditioned and equipped with smart boards and projectors for inclusive education. The library is well equipped and updated frequently.
Faculty: NLU-J has a comparatively better faculty than a lot of other law schools. It has teachers with years of experience who have been there in the college through inception and has also brought in new teachers with great portfolios.
Co-Curricular: NLU-J has been a strong player in this field for quite some time now.
Debating and MUN: The debating teams of NLU-J have performed well over time but the debating culture is not given much preference over mooting.
NH-65 and Yuvardha: The first is the cultural and second is the sports fest of the college and both of them see a major crowd from the law universities.
Mooting: It has probably one of the best records in this field and has been doing well constantly. The college has compulsory courtroom exercises in each subject and hence grooms the students really well. Some claim it to be the best but that is highly subjective. However, it has had a great track record.
Sports: The College has almost all facilities on its campus and boasts of one of the best football fields.
Alumni: The College due to its early conception has a great alumni base and its members are spread in various aspects of the field. The college has a very good reputation in the eyes of law firms and lawyers alike.
Placement: NLU-J has had a great placement record and even secured 100% placement in the previous as well as present year. It has had a highest package of around 18 lakhs and has stuck to an average package of around 12 Lakhs.
Peer Atmosphere: The peer atmosphere is really competitive as is expected of a good law school and there is healthy competition in every field among students which pushes them to do better.
NLU-D: National Law University – Delhi
Establishment: The College was established in 2008 by the Act No.1 of 2008 of NCT Delhi and is one of the fastest growing colleges in the league. It already figures in the top NLUs.
Batch Strength: 81(approx)
Location and Infrastructure: NLU-D is located in Dwarka sec-14 of the national capital and is well connected with the metro stations. It is considered to be one of the best placed law colleges in terms of location as Delhi holds a lot of opportunities for the budding lawyer and the Supreme Court just adds cherry to the pie. The campus is very beautiful and the classrooms are air-conditioned and equipped with state-of-the-art technology for inclusive learning.
As for the library, NLU-D boasts of having one of the best libraries amongst all law schools. The library is spacious and air-conditioned and accessible to student till 12 a.m. on a working day and till 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Faculty: NLU-D is said to have one of the best faculties amongst the NLUs. NLU-D attracted a lot of big names from different colleges after its conception. It attracted vast number of professors from NUJS and NALSAR. A few big names include Dr.M.P. Singh, Dr. B.B. Pandey and Dr. Anup Surendranath amongst a lot of others.
Co-Curricular: NLU-D has been doing really well in the co-curricular and it has already made a name for itself in various fields.
Debating and MUN: NLU-D has a great debating culture and it is considered one of the best in the field and has recently won a number of prestigious awards related to the same. MUN however is an area which has not seen much involvement from the college but it has still done well in the few encounters.
Kairos and Zafir: Kairos is the cultural fest and Zafir is the sports fest of NLU-D. Both are comparatively new but have seen a great amount of participation. Zafir was organized the first time in 2016 in the JLN stadium which was earlier a venue for commonwealth games.
Mooting: NLU-D despite being one of the younger colleges has made a great name in the field of mooting. It has been doing well constantly in moots like ICC, JESSUP and various other international moots. It is important to mention here that NLU-D is one of the only colleges which provides for complete funding of expenses on a moot by the students.
Sports: The College has an excellent basketball/volleyball court, badminton court and two rec. rooms in the two hostel buildings. Apart from this a football field is being prepared in the campus. It is also to be noted here that the students get to go a sports fest of another college every year.
Alumni: National Law University-Delhi was established in 2008 and has seen just 4 batches passing out including this year (2016). Hence it does not have as good an alumni network as NUJS or NLUJ. However the alumni are very well placed in different sphere of the profession and have been raising standards ever since. This has led to a great reputation of NLU-D among recruiters.
Placement: The placement record of NLU-D, considering it is comparatively new as compared to the other two has been great. It has shown a record of 100% placement in almost all years till now and the batch passing out this year has had a highest package around 18-20 lakhs and the average package has been around 12 lakhs. Even the batch in 4th year has placed 20 students out of those who sat for the placements.
Peer atmosphere: The atmosphere in the college is extremely competitive. The batch size is small and hence the opportunities available are a lot but this also makes the race for the best fiercer. The relationship with seniors is really good who are always there to help out in case of any advice in terms of any and everything.
Choosing the best Law School
I hope the above information is of help to anyone who is confused while choosing colleges. All three are really good colleges and have been doing excellent in the field. While WBNUJS and NLUJ have been there for a bit longer and have a better alumni base, NLU-D has been growing at an exceptional rate and is placed at a very opportunistic location. Even after it being one of the younger law schools, its name figure among the top. One point of consideration might be connectivity with the other parts of the country and while WBNUJS and NLU-D are well placed in these terms, NLU-J lags behind slightly. In terms of infrastructure, NLU-D and NLUJ take the lead from WBNUJS which has a comparatively smaller campus. One of the major considerations is the atmosphere of the universities and among the 3, NLU-D has the highest academic pressure but it is not very different from NLUJ which also has a very rigorous academic schedule with frequent tests or WBNUJS. The competitive streak among students can be seen in all three colleges. Also the culture in these NLUs regarding senior-junior relationship is pretty chill and the seniors are always ready to help. There are mentorship programmes in place which further help the new kid to settle in college and get used to the life. Mooting culture, which is an important consideration in the law school life, is excellent in all three colleges. Last but not the least is the criterion of placement. All three colleges have a very similar record in terms of placements with NUJS taking a slight lead at the present but NLUJ and NLUD are close at its heels.
I would like to end the article with a partial comment. NLU-D is comparatively young and is already being considered a match for these colleges due to its excellent location, great faculty and stunning performance. Hence I would personally advise you to come to Delhi.
