India has always had a very steady economic growth, with more and more multinational companies establishing their branches here. Often times these MNC’s need legal guidance and rely heavily upon lawyers, thus corporate law can be a lucrative field for all those who aspire to be lawyers.
To put it in a nutshell the role of a corporate lawyer entails providing his/her legal expertise to businesses on complying with rules and regulations of the corporate setup, conducting mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, public listings and drafting corporate agreements. It can also transcend into other areas such as media law, real estate law, tax law and other laws pertaining to business regulations.

- Being a Corporate Lawyer needs hard work and patience. One must have strong analytical skills, good interpersonal skills and a functioning understanding of the business environment. It does pay well but one has to put in long hours. It is always best to interact with a corporate lawyer, to understand their lifestyle and work habits before you take the final decision.
- It is imperative that you research and join a good law school be it a 5 year law program or 3 year one, the choice is yours. The key however is cracking the Common Law Entrance Test (CLAT), for which you may have to prepare a great deal. It would require a lot of dedication and focus. - You must also know whether you want to immediately join a law firm after finishing your LLB or pursue post graduation. If you want to specialise in corporate law then doing a post graduation or diploma course in corporate law can be extremely beneficial.
- Joining a bar council before practicing as a lawyer can be quite fruitful. It can help in grooming you as a lawyer as it acts as a statutory body which lays down standards of professional conduct and legal education. You can join either the Bar Council of India or a local or state bar council by submitting an application.
- Deciding between working with a corporate firm or an in house counsel can also be a tricky affair. So it may be important that you research your prospects before making a decision. Both are good in their own way. Working with a corporate firm will give you good exposure to a wide range of clients and projects and a lot of on the job learning, where as in an in house counsel you will be part of the legal department of a company or organisation. It ultimately boils down to what kind of work and environment you are looking for. Gathering sufficient experience can also help you start your own firm.
- Lastly you should never stop learning as new business developments and changes in corporate law keep happening so it is important to stay updated, especially with the new kinds of technologies.
