Criminal law as a profession

Ever thought of pursuing criminal law as a career option? To define it in a nutshell criminal law is a branch of law that requires one to deal with legal cases related to criminal offences. It has various sub fields in which one can specialize i.e. cybercrime, domestic violence, murder, gender crimes (rape, sexual abuse or harassment), criminal trial and forensic science.
In spite the thrills and challenges in this field, being a criminal lawyer is not easy. Some essential traits one must possess to rise in this field are:
1) Having a patient temperament
2) The ability to work long hours
3) Good analytical and interpersonal skills
4) The ability to communicate and convince the judge in such a way that it favors your client.
Being a criminal lawyer one can choose to work as a public defender or as a private criminal lawyer. A criminal lawyer is required to constantly interact with clients, gather facts, data and evidence for the case, interviewing eyewitnesses, having interactions with the police and finally appearing before the court to defend your client.
With the rise of criminal cases and exploitation that prevails against several sections of our society, one will always have criminal cases to handle. There are plenty of opportunities in criminal law. To pursue criminal law one has to pursue masters in criminal justice or criminology, after having completed their bachelors in law. While starting out in the field of criminal law one will encounter a phase of struggle, a phase which is very much needed for experience. This phase would largely entail assisting a professional criminal lawyer for experience and insights about the profession.
One of the primary responsibilities of a criminal lawyer is to represent and defend your client who may be accused of committing a crime. Being the lawyer it is imperative that all facts presented are in the favor of your client, to prove their innocence. There may be times where you might get caught in a moral dilemma but a good lawyer has to keep their professional commitment in mind. For all of you who are interested in this field it is important that you start sharpening your focus and working towards that goal.
