- As per the direction of the Union Human Resource Development Ministry, University Grants Commission (UGC) set up a five-member committee headed by Chairman DP Singh and assisted by UGC Joint Secretary (Private Universities) Surender Singh, to look into the allegations of sale of fake degrees by certain universities. The committee has been given three weeks to identify institutions and individuals that have resorted to such illegal practices so that strict action can be taken against all the people involved.
- The Election Commission’s new mega Electors Verification Programme which seeks to update electoral rolls through crowd sourcing will be launched across the country on 1st September, 2019. The programme will go on till 15th October. Under the programme, a voter from each family will get a username and password, allowing a person to upload all documents related to electoral registration and tag similar details about his or her family members. These details will then be verified by block-level officers.
- Bihar Government has banned the manufacture, storage, distribution, transportation and sale of pan masala containing magnesium carbonate which could cause heart diseases. The food and safety department of the State Government had found that pan masala contains magnesium carbonate after examining various samples.
- Nripendra Misra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, resigned from his post at a time when India’s GDP growth slowed down to more than a five-year low of 5% in the June quarter of 2019-20 against 5.8% in the March quarter. Misra was the former Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), serving from 2006 to 2009. Former cabinet secretary Pradeep Kumar Sinha, a 1977 batch Uttar Pradesh-cadre IAS officer, who superannuated on Friday has been appointed as the officer on special duty (OSD) in the Prime Minister’s Office.
- PM Narendra Modi presented National Yoga Awards 2019 in recognition of contribution for promotion and development of Yoga. He has also launched 10 AYUSH Health and Wellness Centres in Haryana. Winners of Yoga Awards 2019 in the national category are Bihar School of Yoga, Munger (Organisation Category) and Swami Rajarshi Muni of Life Mission (Individual Category).
- Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the four mergers of PSU (Public Sector Undertaking) Banks – Punjab National Bank + Oriental Bank of Commerce + United Bank of India, Canara Bank + Syndicate Bank, Union Bank + Andhra Bank + Corporation Bank and Indian Bank + Allahabad Bank. With this, India will now have 12 public sector banks.
- Aparna Kumar, a 2002 batch IPS officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre, became the first IPS officer to be honoured with the prestigious Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 2018. She won the award in the ‘Land adventure’ category. She is currently posted as the DIG in the Indo Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBP) at Dehradun.
- Former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshyari has been appointed as the new Governor of Maharashtra while former Union Minister Arif Mohammed Khan will take the responsibility as the Governor of Kerala. Former Union Minister Bandaru Dattatraya will be the new Governor of Himachal Pradesh in place of Kalraj Mishra who has been given the charge of Governor of Rajasthan. Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan is the new Governor of Telangana.
