- A US delegation led by Assistant Trade Representative Christopher Wilson held bilateral talks with a team of Indian officials headed by Additional Secretary, Department of Commerce, Sanjay Chadha in New Delhi on 12th July, 2019 to provide a new impetus to bilateral trade and commercial ties. The two sides discussed the broad contours of bilateral trade and commercial ties and agreed to continue discussions for achieving mutually beneficial outcomes.
- Vikas Swarup, a 1986-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, has been appointed as the Secretary (Consular, Passport, Visa and Overseas Indian Affairs) in the External Affairs Ministry. His appointment will come into effect from August 1st, 2019. Swarup is at present India’s High Commissioner to Canada.
- State Bank of India Managing Director (MD) Anshula Kant has been appointed as the MD and Chief Financial Officer of the World Bank. Ms Kant will be responsible for the financial and risk management of the organisation. Her work will include oversight of financial reporting, risk management, and working closely with the World Bank CEO on the mobilization of the International Development Association (IDA) and other financial resources. The 58-year-old joined SBI in 1983 as a probationary officer.
- National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Director General of Russia’s space agency (ROSCOSMOS) Dmitry Rogozin held high-level talks in New Delhi to elevate bilateral co-operation to the next level in the field of space, including assistance in India’s maiden human space flight mission ‘Gaganyaan’.
- The 2019 global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) from the UN Development Programme (UNDP) said that the number of poor people in India fell by more than 271 million between the period of 2006 and 2016. It shows that, in the 101 countries assessed – 31 low income, 68 middle income and 2 high income –about 1.3 billion people are “multi-dimensionally poor”. Bihar was still the poorest state in 2015- 16, with more than half of its population living in poverty.
- Union Agriculture Ministry under the National Agriculture Development Scheme has set up RAFTAAR, an Agri-Business Incubation Centre at the Indira Gandhi Agriculture University of Raipur. The objective of the scheme is to make farming a remunerative economic activity by strengthening farmer’s efforts, risk mitigation and promoting agri-business entrepreneurship.
- Meghalaya became the first state in India to ensure the conservation of water and have its own water policy following a nod given by the State Cabinet on 12th July, 2019. The objective of the policy is to recognize water resources as a common pool resource, to provide safe and hygienic water for drinking, domestic use and sanitation and livelihood development to all residents of the state.
