- India for the first time will host the ‘Army scouts masters competition’, scheduled to be held between end of July to mid-August 2019, in Jaisalmer City, Rajasthan. This is the 5th edition of International Army games organised by Russia. Since its inception in 2015, India has been participating in Army Games. It is designed to forge strong ties with friendly foreign countries.
- India and Botswana held the third round of Foreign Office Consultations in New Delhi on May 15, 2019. The Indian side of the delegation was led by Dr. Neena Malhotra, Joint Secretary in East and Southern Africa, Ministry of External Affairs. The Botswana side was led by Tapiwa Mongwa, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of International Affairs of Botswana. Both the sides discussed cooperation in various sectors such as political, economic, commercial, defence, consular and international cooperation.
- Tien Chung-Kwang, Representative of Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre and TAITRA James CF Huang, Chairman of Taiwan External Trade Development Council, inaugurated the three-day Taiwan Expo 2019 in New Delhi. The expo focuses on green products, health care sector, agriculture, tourism, biotechnology and electrical equipments.
- The Austria approved a new law, banning headscarf in primary schools on May 15, 2019. The Government clarified that the patka head covering worn by Sikh boys and the Jewish kippa would not be affected. Austria previously had introduced a ban on full-face covering in 2017 as a part of its integration policy, which was aimed at limiting the visibility of orthodox Islam in public life.
- The President of the United States, Donald Trump on May 15, 2019 declared a national emergency to protect the US computer networks from foreign adversaries. It effectively bars US companies from using foreign telecoms that are believed to pose a risk to the security of the nation. Though the executive order does not name any company specifically, according to analysts it is mainly directed at Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei.
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on May 15, 2019 released ‘Payment and Settlement Systems in India: Vision 2019 – 2021’, a vision document for safe, secure, quick and affordable e-payment system. The Payment Systems Vision 2021 states 36 specific action points and 12 specific outcomes. - Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose, the Chairperson of the Lokpal, on May 16, 2019 inaugurated the website of Lokpal ‘lokpal.gov.in’. National Informatics Centre (NIC) developed the website which provides the basic information about the working and functioning of the Lokpal. Established under the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013, Lokpal is the first of its kind institutionin India. India got its first Lokpal on March 19, 2019 with the appointment of Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose as the Chairperson of Lokpal. The Lokpal has four Judicial and four non-Judicial Members.
