- The 2019 Booker Prize has been jointly awarded to Margaret Atwood for ‘The Testaments’ and Bernardine Evaristo for ‘Girl, Woman, Other’ after the judges broke their rules by declaring a tie. Atwood, 79, is the oldest ever winner of the Booker Prize, while Evaristo is the first black woman to win. The award’s rules were changed after the last tie in 1992. Created in 1969, Booker Prize is a literary prize, awarded annually for the best original novel written in the English language and published in the United Kingdom (UK).
- The Duke of Cambridge Prince William and his Duchess Kate Middleton arrived in Pakistan on 15th October, 2019. It will be the first trip to Pakistan by members of the royal family since 2006. The UK aims at access to quality education to girls and young women in Pakistan. The Prince is to focus on climate change and tour around Pakistan during his visit. The program and purpose of the visit is being kept a secret due to security constraints.
- The 3rd India Energy Forum by CERAWeek has been organised in association with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas in New Delhi from 13th to 15th October, 2019. The Summit gives a platform to examine the fundamental challenges and opportunities to provide sustainable, secure and affordable energy choices to the people of India. India is expected to get $58 billion as investment in the exploration and production sector by 2023 and an estimated investment of $60 billion is underway for augmenting gas infrastructure. The India Energy Forum was established in 2001.
- India and Sierra Leone signed six agreements during Vice President Venkaiah Naidu’s visit to the West African countries. India extended a credit line of $30 million for rice cultivation. India decided to establish a High Commission in Sierra Leone. Both countries also agreed to push for United Nations Security Council (UNSC) reforms so that one-third (33%) of mankind residing in Africa and India occupy their rightful place in decision-making bodies of UN.
- The Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav, the flagship festival of the Ministry of Culture was organised in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh on 14th October, 2019. Started in 2015, it showcases the rich cultural heritage of India. It aims to promote engagement of different states and union territories to enhance mutual understanding and bonding between people of diverse cultures. It is a part of the “Ek Bharat, Shreshta Bharat” program.
- Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a 190 million USD loan to upgrade the road transport in Rajasthan on 12th October, 2019. It includes upgrading of 754 km of state highways. In 2017, the bank had offered 220 million USD of loan to upgrade 1,000 km of road. The ADB was established in 1966 with headquarters in Philippines. India is the fourth largest shareholder in the bank.
- The 2019 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships was held in Ulan-Ude, Russia from 3rd to 13th October, 2019. India’s Debutant Manju Rani (48kg) won a silver medal at the event while M C Mary Kom (51kg), Jamuna Boro (54kg) and Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) had to settle for bronze medals. The AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships is a biennial amateur boxing competition organized by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) since 2001.
