- Alan Turing, the code-breaker during World War II, has been chosen by the Bank of England to feature on Britain’s new £50 note. The £50 note will be the last of Bank of England collection before the switch from paper to polymer is done and is due to enter circulation by the end of 2021. Turing is also referred to as the “Father of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI)” for his far ranging and path-breaking contributions in the field.
- Justice A K Sikri, former Supreme Court judge has been appointed as an International Judge of the Singapore International Commercial Court. He retired from Supreme Court of India on 6th March, 2019. He was appointed as the Chairman of News Broadcasting Standards Authority (NBSA) on 14th May, 2019. Singapore International Commercial Court was officially launched on 5th January, 2015 with a vision to promote Singapore as a leading dispute resolution hub.
- Rajya Sabha member Anusuiya Uikey has been appointed as the Governor of Chhattisgarh and Senior Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) leader Biswa Bhushan Harichandan has been appointed as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh. Anusuiya Uikey replaced Anandiben Patel, who is the Governor of Madhya Pradesh and was also holding the additional charge of Chhattisgarh due to the sudden demise of Chhattisgarh Governor Balram Das Tandon in August 2018. Biswa Bhusan replaced ESL Narasimhan, who was serving as Governor for Andhra Pradesh since December 2009. Article 153 is the relevant constitutional provision that deals with appointment of governors to states and reads – ‘There shall be a Governor for each State’.
- Kane Williamson of New Zealand was named the captain of the World Cup 2019 XI squad and only two Indians were included as the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced “team of the tournament” for World Cup 2019. Rohit Sharma, who was the leading run-scorer in the tournament with 648 runs at an average of 81 and Jasprit Bumrah, who picked 18 wickets at an average of 20.61 are the only two Indians included in the playing XI.
- National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to shut down polluting industries in “critically polluted” and “severely polluted” areas within three months. On the basis of a study jointly carried out by the CPCB and state pollution control boards in 2009-10, industrial clusters were notified as Polluted Industrial Areas (PIAs) and they were ranked as ‘critically polluted area’ (CPA), ‘severely polluted area’ (SPA) and ‘other polluted areas’ (OPAs), depending upon the Comprehensive Environmental Pollution Index scores. The tribunal also directed the Ministry of Environment and Forests to take steps for enforcement of action plan for improvement of the situation.
- India and Italy, in a meeting in New Delhi, have decided to set up a fast track mechanism to facilitate investors and companies. The meeting was attended by Ambassador of Italy to India, Lorenzo Angeloni and Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), Ramesh Abhishek. The fast-track system in Italy aims to identify and solve problems faced by Indian companies and investors. DIPP was established in 1995.
- According to the first comprehensive census of orchids of India titled ‘Orchids of India: A Pictorial Guide’, India is home to 1,256 species of orchid. The census containing photographs of 775 species was published by the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) and was unveiled by Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC). The highest number of orchid species was recorded in Arunachal Pradesh with 612 species.
