- The Centre has created a new Ministry called ‘Jal Shakti’ by merger of Ministries of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation along with Drinking Water and Sanitation to bring all aspects of water management and regulation under one department. The Jal ministry will be headed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Gajendra Singh Shekhawat while Ram Lal Kataria will be the minister of state.
- AYUSH Ministry, ahead of International Yoga Day on June 21, has launched a mobile application ‘Yoga Locator’ to enable people to locate yoga events and centres providing training and instructors. It will also enable yoga instructors to register themselves and reach out to a large number of people.
- The World Health Organisation (WHO) awarded Rajasthan government’s Medical & Health Department its Tobacco Control Award for year 2019 in recognition of Rajasthan’s achievements in the field of tobacco control. WHO selected total 33 institutions and individuals across world including five organisations from the South-East Asian (SEA) region in India (2), Thailand and Indonesia. The other institute selected from India (in SEA region) is Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute (in New Delhi).
- Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will visit Siachen glacier on 3 June, 2019 and review the security situation there. Minister will interact with the soldiers and officers and know about the issues faced by them during their deployment on the world’s highest battlefield. The Siachen base camp starts at around 12,000 feet and the highest ones range up to 23,000 feet. It witnesses temperature of up to minus 70 degrees in winters.
- The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved Rs.3000 monthly pension scheme for small retail traders and shopkeepers after they attain the age of 60 years. This pension scheme is a part of Prime Minister’s vision to provide a robust architecture of universal social security.
- Telangana celebrated the fifth anniversary of formation of the state on 2 June 2019. The state of Telangana was officially formed on 2 June 2014 and Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao was elected as the first chief minister of Telangana, following elections in which the Telangana Rashtra Samithi party secured majority. In February 2014, Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 bill was passed by the Parliament of India for the formation of Telangana state comprising ten districts from north-western Andhra Pradesh.
- US President Donald Trump has said that the country will end its preferential trade treatment for India from 5 June, 2019 under the key GSP trade programme after determining that it has not assured the US that it will provide “equitable and reasonable access” to its markets. The Generalized System of Preference (GSP) is the decades’ old trade preference programme which allows designated beneficiary countries to export goods to the United States without paying duties.
