- M P Birla Memorial Award 2019 was conferred upon Thanu Padmanabhan, a 62-year old Physicist and Cosmologist, for his contributions to the world of cosmology. He is a Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awardee and a Padma Shri-recipient scientist (2007). The award was established in 1993 to recognise the excellence in research in space science, astrophysics, astronomy and related areas.
- World Translation Day is observed every year on 30th September across the globe to pay tribute to the language professionals. The day was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2017 through a resolution. This year, the theme of the day was “Indigenous languages”.
- The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare organized the first National Nutrition Survey with the help of UNICEF during the period of 2016-2018. Around 10% of children in the age group of 5 to 9 years and adolescents in the age group of 10 to 19 years are pre-diabetic. 5% of them were overweight and 5% suffered from blood pressure. Tamil Nadu and Goa had the highest number of adolescents who were either obese or overweight.
- To commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Doordarshan -India’s public service broadcaster – have joined together to telecast TV bilingual programme ‘Mahatma Lives’ or ‘Bapu Zinda Hain’ on 1st and 2nd October 2019. It is aimed at celebrating his ideas and teachings and how it has shaped the lives of people in India and around the world.
- The World Rabies Day is observed every year on 28th September to create awareness about the impact of rabies on human and animals, increase efforts of rabies control and create awareness about prevention of the disease. The day commemorates the death anniversary of Louis Pasteur, who developed the first rabies vaccine. The day is organised by the Global Alliance World Rabies Control, which is headquartered in United States in 2007.
- On the occasion of completion of 25 years of Army Air Defense College, President Ram Nath Kovind presented the President’s Colors Award to the Corps of Army Air Defense. They also won four military crosses, seven Indian Distinguished service medals and one medal of British Empire. The Air Defense was in existence since 1940, but got recognition as an independent arm only in 1994.
- Telangana is celebrating Bathukamma, its flower festival, from 29th September to 6th October, 2019. The nine-day long festival marks the beginning of Sharath Ruthu and begins on the day of Mahalaya Amavasya. The festival represents the culture and identity of people of Telangana and involves the worship of Maha Gauri.
