- Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel won 10 medals (5 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals) at the World Police and Fire Games 2019 (WPFG-2019) held at Chengdu, China’s southwestern Sichuan province from 8th to 18th August, 2019. Started in 1985, World Police and Fire Games is a worldwide Olympic-style sporting event, which is held every two years.
- Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has approved a proposal to provide 70 litres of water for free to the residents of the thirteen desert districts of the state. He has approved the proposal of the finance department for amending the water tariff to give relief to the people of the state. The state government had previously approved providing 40 litres of free water to all individuals in rural areas of the state.
- Union Minister of State for AYUSH Shripad Yesso Naik inaugurated the two-day National Conference on Varmam Science organized by the National Institute of Siddha in Chennai on 22nd August, 2019. ‘Varmam’ is a constituent of the Siddha system of medicine that also doubles up as a martial art.
- The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed Secretary in Ministry of Home Affairs Rajiv Gauba as India’s new Cabinet Secretary for two years. Cabinet Secretary is the most powerful position in country’s civil service. He will succeed the 1977 batch Uttar Pradesh-cadre IAS officer Pradeep Kumar Sinha.
- The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed Secretary of Department of Defence Production Ajay Kumar as Secretary, Union Ministry of Defence. He will succeed Sanjay Mitra, a 1982 batch West Bengal-cadre IAS officer. Subash Chandra, a 1986 batch IAS officer will replace Ajay Kumar as the new Defence Production Secretary of India.
- SARAL (State Rooftop Solar Attractiveness Index) was launched by Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy (IC) RK Singh during the Review Planning and Monitoring (RPM) Meeting with States and State Power Utilities held in New Delhi. SARAL evaluates Indian states based on their attractiveness for rooftop development. Karnataka has been placed at the top of the index followed by Telangana.
- International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief was observed for the first time on 22nd August, 2019 to honour victims and survivors of heinous acts who often remain forgotten. This day comes right after the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, which is observed on 21st August. The United Nation General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution A/RES/73/296 on 28th May, 2019 designating 22nd August as the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief.
- Dwayne Johnson topped the world’s highest-paid actors’ list, released by Forbes. The only Bollywood actor in the list, Akshay Kumar was ranked fourth with an earning of USD 65 million (about Rs 450 crore).
