- The World Health Organisation (WHO) launched a new online tool called AWaRe (Access, Watch and Reserve) developed by WHO’s Essential Medicines List (EML), which is aimed at guiding policy-makers and health workers of country to reduce spread of antimicrobial resistance, adverse events and costs. In India, Union Ministry of Health Affair has made it mandatory to display a 5mm-thick red vertical band (line) on packaging of prescription-only drugs.
- The World Refugee Day is observed across the world on 20 June every year to celebrate stories and contributions of refugees. The theme for this year was Step with Refugees – Take a Step on World Refugee Day. On 4 December 2000, United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in resolution 55/76 proclaimed the day.
- Renowned Author Amish Tripathi will succeed diplomat Srinivas Gotru as the new director of London’s Nehru Centre, under Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). He is the author of books such as ‘Secret of the Nagas’ and ‘Sita – Warrior of Mithila’. London’s Nehru’s centre was established in 1992 with the goal of promoting cultural exchange between India and UK.
- The Indian women’s rugby team claimed a historic first-ever international Rugby 15s victory with a 21-19 win over Singapore to finish third in the Asia Women’s – Division 1 Rugby XVs Championship in Manila on 23 June. China won the tournament with a 68-0 victory over hosts Philippines in a final.
- Rivigo, a Gurgaon-based tech-enabled logistics start-up has launched National Freight Index (NFI) that will provide live freight rates for different lanes and vehicles across the country. Rivigo owns a fleet of over 3,000 trucks, which works on ‘Relay Model’. NFI offers a combined picture of both live rates and historical trends of spot price movements in India’s road freight industry.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the 14th G20 Summit in Osaka, Japan on 28th and 29th of June. Former Union Minister Suresh Prabhu will be India’s sherpa at the summit. The theme of the summit is “Human-centred future society”. India will host the G20 summit in 2022 for the first time.
- Indian Pranati Nayak won bronze medal in vault event held at Senior Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships 2019 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. China’s Yu Linmin (14.350) clinched the gold and Japan’s Ayaka Sakaguchi (13.584) won silver medal at the event. Pranati now stands tall as India’s 3rd major vaulting medallist after Dipa Karmakar and Aruna Reddy.
- The Bihar Government banned felling of trees in different cities, citing increasing pollution as well as a fatal heat-wave in the state as reason for the ban. The decision comes after most cities of Bihar ranked in list of World’s most polluted cities. This new scheme is valid only for State Government owned properties and not for people who privately own a tree. Bihar has been able to increase its green cover from 7% to 15% under the Green Mission whose target is 17%.
