- Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Group places Pakistan on its Blacklist (Enhanced Expedited Follow Up List) for its failure in meeting the required global standards; and combating terrorism and money laundering. FATF will hold a plenary meeting in Paris in October 2019 to decide on Pakistan’s Grey list status. FATF added Pakistan on its Grey List in June 2018.
- Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has approved a proposal to declare ocean energy as Renewable Energy. Energies such as tidal, wave and ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) will now be considered as Renewable Energy. It will make ocean energy eligible for meeting the non-solar Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPO).
- Former MP and Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley passed away on 24th August, 2019 at the age of 66. Arun Jaitley first became a Cabinet minister in the government of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2000. He then served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha from June 2009. He was appointed as the Finance Minister in the Modi government in 2014. He opted out of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections citing health reasons.
- The United Nations and France called for protection against the Amazon Rainforest Fire. Though the extent of the destruction is not exactly known yet, the smoke has choked the whole of Sao Paulo and other Brazilian cities. Around 73,000 forest fires have been recorded in Brazil since the beginning of 2019, the highest number since 2013. Wildfires have been an international crisis.
- Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Culture and Tourism Prahlad Singh Patel launched the book ‘The Diary of Manu Gandhi’ (1943-44), edited and translated by Tridip Suhrud, at Nehru Memorial Museum and Library in New Delhi. The National Archives of India, in collaboration with Oxford University Press, published the book. Manu Gandhi (Mridula) was the grand niece of Mahatma Gandhi and stayed with him till his assassination. National Archives of India was established as the ‘Imperial Record Department’ on 11 March 1891 at Kolkata.
- Indian Army and Tata Realty & Housing signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to provide quality housing to army personnel. Army Welfare Housing Organization (AWHO) will now facilitate acquisition of homes from reputed private builders at discounted rates rather than building them for soldiers. AWHO is a society formed in December 1978.
- Iran unveiled its new home-grown air defence system called Bavar-373 during a ceremony held on Iran’s ‘National Defence Industry Day’. Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has ordered to add Bavar-373 to country’s missile defence network. It is Iran’s first domestically produced long-range missile defence system.
- Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced that Bharatcraft portal, an e-commerce marketing platform, will be launched by Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). It will provide platform for MSMEs to market and sell their products and in turn, boost the overall sector. It has the potential to achieve revenues of around Rs. 10 lakh crore in 2-3 years.
