- US President Donald Trump reached Japan on 25 May, 2019 for a four-day visit. President Trump will meet Japan’s new Emperor Naruhito, who ascended the Chrysanthemum Throne. President Trump will also address troops at a US base in Japan, highlighting the military alliance between the two allies at a time when tensions are running higher with North Korea after the failure of the Hanoi summit in February.
- According to a United Nations’ report titled World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) Report 2019 Mid-year Update, India’s economy is projected to grow at 7.1 % in fiscal year 2020 which will be backed by strong domestic consumption and investment. After an expansion of 3% in 2018, world gross product growth is now projected to settle to 2.7 % in 2019 and 2.9 % in 2020.
- In 2019 Lok Sabha Election Results, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has won 303 seats on its own, surpassing its previous record of 282 seats in 2014. The 16th Lok Sabha has been dissolved with the acceptance of the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Council of Ministers by President Ram Nath Kovind on May 24, 2019. The term of the 16th Lok Sabha will officially end on June 3, 2019.
- According to the report “Women in Business and Management: The business case for change” released by United Nation’s (UN) International Labour Organization (ILO), Companies that improve gender diversity especially at top perform better and reported higher profits hikes in between 5% to 20%. Founded on 29 October 1919, ILO is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. It became United Nations first specialised agency in 1946.
- Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully test-fired an indigenously-developed 500 kg class guided bomb from a Sukhoi combat jet at Pokhran in Rajasthan. The test firing of the guided bomb came two days after the Indian Air Force successfully test fired the aerial version of the supersonic BrahMos cruise missile from a Sukhoi jet at the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The 2.5-tonne air-to-surface missile has a range of around 300 km, and it will significantly enhance the IAF’s combat capability.
- The Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) new commercial arm called NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) was officially inaugurated in Bengaluru. On 6 March 2019, the Department of Space (DoS) registered its second commercial entity called NSIL for commercially utilising research and development (R&D) activities carried out by ISRO in area of space. The first commercial venture of DoS was Antrix Corporation Limited, which was set up in September 1992 to market products and services of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
- India bags a total of 57 medals including 12 Gold, 18 Silver and 27 Bronze at India Open International Boxing tournament in Guwahati. MC Mary Kom, Shiva Thapa, L Sarita Devi and Naman Tanwar won gold in their respective finals. In women’s 54 kg, Jamuna Boro defeated Sandhyarani and also qualified for the World Championship. In men’s 69 kg Aashish clinched the Gold, while in women’s 57 kg category Neeraj won the final. Deepak defeated Govind Kumar in 49 kg final while in 52 kg category – Amit Panghal defeated Sachin.
