Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly passed the Andhra Pradesh Employment of Local Candidates in the Industries and Factories Bill, 2019 which mandates reserved employment for at least 75% state candidates (locals) in all private industrial units and factories, irrespective of whether companies get financial aid or any other help from the state government. With this bill, Andhra Pradesh became the first state to reserve jobs for locals in respective units.
National Institute for Medical Statistics (NIMS) under Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in partnership with Population Council has launched National Data Quality Forum (NDQF) to improve quality of health and demographic data in India. Activities undertaken by NDQF will help establish protocols and good practices of data collection, storage, use and dissemination that can be applied to health and demographic data.
A team of researchers from Indian Institute of Science (IIS), Bengaluru trying to study snakes present in the Western Ghats of India found a new species of vine snakes belonging to an ancient ancestry dating back to somewhere between 20 to 30 million years. The scientific name of the snake is genus Proahaetulla and it belongs to the family of Ahaetuliinae. Western Ghats which is a habitat of more than 5,000 plant and 140 species, was declared as a world heritage site in July 2012 by UNESCO.
Priti Patel has taken charge as United Kingdom’s first Indian-origin Home Secretary in the Boris Johnson-led Cabinet. She will succeed Pakistani-origin Sajid Javid, who was elevated as the first ethnic minority Chancellor of the Exchequer. She was appointed as the Secretary of State in the Department for International Development (DfID) in 2016 but was forced to quit in 2017.
The Lok Sabha passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage), Bill, 2019, commonly known as the Triple Talaq bill by voice vote on 25th July, 2019 to bring in a law banning instant triple talaq. The bill is aimed at providing justice, equality and dignity to Muslim women.
The 20th Anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas is being celebrated with the theme ‘Remember, Rejoice and Renew’ on 26th July, 2019. The day is named after the successful Operation Vijay in 1999, when India regained the control on the high outposts which had been stealthily taken over by Pakistan.
The Indian football team slipped two places to 103rd in the FIFA rankings released on 25th July, 2019. The Indian team with 1214 points now lies at 18th among Asian countries. Iran (23rd) is at the top among Asian countries, followed by Japan (33), Korea (37), Australia (46) and Qatar (62). Overall, Belgium leads the chart, followed by Brazil, France, England and Uruguay.
