- Veteran actor Meryl Streep is selected for the Tribute Actor Award 2019 at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The 70-year-old actress is the most nominated actor in Academy Award history and has won the Oscar three times. Founded in 1976, TIFF is one of the world’s largest publicly attended film festivals.
- Chief Minister of Haryana Manohar Lal Khattar invited Nepal to be the Partner Country for the International Gita Jayanti Mahotsav scheduled to be held at Kurukshetra from 3rd to 8th December 2019. He extended an invitation to the Ambassador of Nepal to India Nilamber Acharya. Gita Jayanti Mahotsav symbolizes the birth of Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, the sacred text of Hindus and the most pious and influential scriptures of Hindu mythology.
- The Indian Olympic Association pulled out of the Commonwealth Games Federation General Assembly meeting, to be held in Kigali, Rwanda in September, to protest the dropping of “shooting” from the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games roster. The federation, instead of shooting, recommended the inclusion of three new sports- beach volleyball (men and women), women’s T20 cricket and para-table tennis (men and women). India had won 16 medals in shooting out of the total 66 during the 2018 Gold Coast CWG. Except Edinburgh CWG 1970, shooting has been a part of every Commonwealth Games since 1966.
- Government has formed a high-level ten-member committee under the Chairmanship of Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju to coordinate and strategise the preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and 2024 Paris Olympics on 26th July, 2019. The committee aims to provide all possible support to potential and qualified athletes for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
- Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Jaipal Reddy passed away, at the age of 77, in Hyderabad. He was a 7-time MP and a 4-term MLA. Reddy was the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Urban Development, Petroleum and Natural Gas and Science and Technology in different governments. He served as the Leader of the Upper House from 1991-92.
- The Minister of Earth Sciences Dr Harsh Vardhan launched a new website of India Meteorological Department – www.mausam.imd.gov.in – on the occasion of the foundation day of Ministry of Earth Sciences. The website will provide all information related to weather. The Ministry of Earth Sciences was formed in the year 2006.
- GST Council decided to reduce the GST rate on Electrical Vehicles from 12 per cent to 5 per cent in its 32nd meeting in New Delhi on 27th July. The Council also decided to reduce the rate on Electric Vehicle Chargers from 18 per cent to 5 per cent. The Council also approved an exemption from GST on the hiring of Electric Buses by local authorities.
