- The 14th summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held in Mecca, Saudi Arabia was hosted by Saudi King Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud. The official agenda of meeting was to address ‘current issues in Muslim world’ and ‘recent developments in a number of OIC member states. OIC was established in 1969 by 24 member states and presently has 57 member states from four continents. OIC has permanent delegations to the UN and the European Union (EU). Its official languages are Arabic, English and French.
- Indian Air Force’s AN-32 transport aircraft goes missing after taking off from Jorhat in Assam for Mechuka Advanced Landing Ground (only 29 kms from the China border), in Mechuka Valley in West Siang District of Arunachal Pradesh. The airborne aircraft had total 13 people on board including 8 aircrew and 5 passengers. AN-32 has been in service since 1984.
- The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) overtook India Oil Corporation (IOC) by regaining crown of being India’s most profitable Public Sector Undertakings (PSU). In fiscal year 2018-19, ONGC’s net profits increased by 34% to Rs.26,716 crore in comparison to it IOC registered a net profit of Rs.17,274 crore. In 2018-19, IOC also lost its title of being India’s largest company to Reliance India Limited which is now India’s biggest firm in terms of revenue, profit and market capitalisation.
- Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced ‘free ride’ scheme which provides free of cost Delhi Metro and DTC bus rides for women. The main objective of the scheme is to ensure safe travel experience for womenin the capital city. The scheme may prove to be challenging in the Delhi metro, as the Delhi government and the Centre are 50:50 equity partners in the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
- India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Dovalhas been reappointed to the post for another five years. Ajit Doval has also been given Cabinet Rank for contribution to national security. Previously, Doval was placed in the Minister of State rank. The 74-year-old previously served as the Director of India’s Intelligence Bureau (IB). He took up the role as India’s National Security Adviser in 2014 after retirement from IB.
- US President Donald Trump arrived in Britain on 3 June, 2019 for a three-day state visit during which he is to attend a banquet hosted by Queen Elizabeth II and meet outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May. He is expected to discuss climate change and Chinese technology firm Huawei during talks with outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May.
- The Nandan Nilekani committee has suggested a host of measures, including elimination of charges, round the clock RTGS and NEFT facility and duty-free import of point-of-sales machines. The committee, which was appointed by the RBI, had submitted its suggestions on promoting digital payments to Governor Shaktikanta Das last month.
