- The 15th edition of Yudh Abhyas, a joint military training exercise between India and United States (US), will be conducted at the Joint Base Lewis Mc Chord, Washington in the USA from 5th to 18th September 2019. It will provide the opportunity to train the armed forces of both the countries in an integrated manner at the battalion level with joint planning at brigade level. The first edition of the Yudh Abhyas was conducted from 16th to 26th May, 2002 in Agra, India.
- Chief Election Commissioner of India (CEC) Sunil Arora has taken over charge as the Chairperson of the Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB) from Daniel Constantin Barbu of Romania. The 1980-batch IAS officer will have a term of two years from 2019-21. Sunil Arora is currently serving as the 23rd Chief Election Commissioner of India. Established in October 2013, AWEB is a multilateral platform for election management bodies from across the world to share best electoral practices.
- Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan announced a blanket ban on all types of single use plastic products in the ministry as well as PSUs, including Food Corporation of India (FCI) from 15th September. Moreover, the department has distributed cloth bags to employees to reduce consumption of single use plastics.
- Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) organised the National Conference on ‘India-Africa Partnership in a Changing Global Order: Priorities, Prospects and Challenges’ in New Delhi. Africa has become an important trade and investment partner for India with a bilateral trade of $62.66 billion in 2017-2018. With an investment of $54 billion, India is the 4th largest investor in Africa.
- Odisha celebrated an agricultural festival called Nuakhai Juhar on 3rd September, 2019 to welcome the new crop of the season. Also called Nuakhai Parab or Nuakahi Bhetghat, Nuakhai Juhar is a harvest festival welcoming the newly harvest crop of the season. It is observed on Panchami Tithi of month of Bhadraba. It is one of the most ancient festivals celebrated in Odisha.
- Teachers’ Day is celebrated across India every year on 5th September to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the first Vice-President of India. Teachers’ Day was first celebrated in the year 1962, when he became the second President of India. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan served as India’s first Vice President from 1952-1962 and as India’s second President from 1962-1967. The day aims to value and acknowledge the contribution of all the teachers in shaping one’s lives.
- India has announced a contribution of $22 million to the Global Fund for AIDS, TB and Malaria (GFTAM) for the 6th Replenishment Cycle (for the year 2020-22). This is an increase of 10% over the amount contributed by India in the 5th cycle. India shares a sustained partnership with Global Fund since 2002, both as a recipient and as a donor. With its secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, the GFTAM commenced its operations in January 2002.
