- In 1349, 700 Jews were burned alive for allegedly spreading the bubonic plague in Basel, Switzerland.
- In 1760, the Marathas were defeated by the Afghans led by Ahmad Shah Durrani in the Battle of Barari Ghat.
- In 1913 – Richard Nixon, 37th US President who became the first American president to resign from office fearing impeachment for the Watergate scandal was born.
- In 1915 – First Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was celebrated on 9 January 2003. The date, 09 January, was selected to mark the return of Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa to India in 1915. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is observed to mark the contribution of the overseas Indian community towards the development of India. PBD convention is organised to celebrate this day. The 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will be celebrated under the theme “Diaspora: Reliable Partners for India’s Progress in Amrit Kaal”. President Droupadi Murmu will present the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards 2023.
